Having Pets and Guests

December 1, 2018
Are you planning to have visitors over the holidays? It’s always great to reconnect with loved ones at this special time of year. However, not everyone is as fond of Fluffy and Fido as we are. Read on as a local Des Moines, IA vet offers some tips on helping things go smoothly between your pets and your guests.

Beauty Treatment

You want your furry buddy to put their best paw forward for your visitors. Take Fido to the salon and get him a bath and a pawdicure. If you have a kitty, give your feline pal a good brushing.

Fur Busting

Before your guests arrive, do a good deep cleaning. A thorough vacuuming and dusting will help get rid of dead fur, dust, and pet dander. Wash your pet’s bedding in hot water and unscented detergent. It’s also a good idea to replace your air filters. Don’t forget to change Fluffy’s litterbox!

Ground Rules

Not everyone knows what is and isn’t safe for pets. Set a few basic ground rules. Ask guests not to feed or discipline your furry pals without permission. Pay extra close attention if your guests have young children. Little kids may inadvertently offer Fido or Fluffy something that isn’t safe for them.

Playtime

Take time to play with your furry friend daily. If you have a dog, take Fido for some long walks. This will help your pet burn off excess energy. Afterwards, they’ll be calmer, and less inclined to mischievous behavior.

No-Go Zone

If your guests are staying overnight, ask them to keep their guest room door closed. This will help prevent awkward incidents, such as Fido eating their shoes or Fluffy sleeping in their suitcase. It will also help keep your pet safe. Guests may leave things like medicine and jewelry on bedside tables. These things can be very dangerous to our furry friends!

Guests With Allergies

If you know or suspect that your visitors have allergies, take a few extra steps to make their stay comfortable. Set out some boxes of tissues, and stock up with OTC allergy medicines. Also, if possible, get hypoallergenic bedding for the guest room. You can also put an air purifier in that room.
